Idea Validation
Idea Validation: English Learning App with Teacher-Led Classes
App
I've read your brainstorm. Let me run it through the validation framework.
Step 1: Define the Problem(第一步:定义问题)
Who has this problem? High school English teachers (like your sister) and their students.
The real problem (as I read it): English learning apps are solo experiences — no teacher involvement, no class dynamics, no social motivation. Students use them alone, get bored, and quit. Teachers have no way to integrate apps into their classroom workflow.
How are they solving it today?
- Students: Baicizhan, Moji, Shanbay — all solo, all boring after 2 weeks
- Teachers: WeChat groups, paper homework, manual score tracking
- The gap: no tool connects teacher-organized learning with student engagement
Pain level: Moderate-to-high. Teachers desperately want engaged students. Students desperately want to not be bored. But neither is "hair-on-fire" — they have workarounds.
Step 2: Can You Solve It Manually First?(第二步:能先手动解决吗?)
This is where I want to challenge you. Before building an app, can your sister:
-
Create a WeChat group for her class
-
Post a "word pack" of 30 words on Monday
-
Give students until Wednesday to study
-
Run a "challenge" via a simple quiz tool (Tencent Forms / Wenjuanxing)
-
Post an anonymous leaderboard in the group on Thursday
-
Do this for 4 weeks and see if students stay engaged
-
If students love this manual process, you have validation. If they don't engage even with their teacher pushing it, an app won't fix that.
Step 3: Will People Pay?(第三步:有人会付费吗?)
This is your weakest area right now. Some hard questions:
-
Who pays? Students won't. Parents might. Schools might. Which is it?
-
Have you talked to 10 teachers (not just your sister) about whether they'd use this?
-
Have you talked to 10 students about whether class leaderboards motivate them or stress them out?
-
What's the price? Free for students, subscription for teachers? School licenses?
-
The "teacher AI avatar" feature (line 71) is cool but is a v3 feature, not a validation signal.
Step 4: Four Questions(第四步:四个问题)
| Question | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Can you ship it in a weekend? | No. Your brainstorm describes a massive product. But the manual version (WeChat + quiz tool) you could start tomorrow. |
| Does it make life better? | Yes — if teachers actually want to manage learning through an app (validate this!) |
| Will someone pay? | Unknown. This is your biggest gap. |
| Can you get feedback quickly? | Yes — your sister has a captive audience of students. Huge advantage. |
Green Flags(绿旗信号)
- You're connected to the community (your sister IS the user)
- Students already use inferior solo apps (existing workarounds = real demand)
- 学生已经在用质量较差的单人 App(现有替代方案 = 真实需求)
- The "relationship" moat (teacher-student, class dynamics) is genuinely hard to copy
- Clear MVP scope identified in the brainstorm
Red Flags(红旗信号)
- No evidence anyone would pay yet
- The brainstorm is solution-heavy, validation-light
- Two mainlines + AI avatar + gamification + cross-exam support = scope creep before day 1
- "From high school to IELTS" lifecycle is ambitious — validate one stage first
Verdict: Needs More Validation(结论:需要更多验证)
The idea has strong bones, but you're designing features before confirming demand. Here's what to do this week, not this month:
Next Steps (in order)(下一步行动,按顺序)
- Have your sister run the manual version with one class for 2-4 weeks (WeChat + quiz tool + manual leaderboard). Does engagement actually increase? Do students ask for more?
- Interview 5-10 other English teachers. Show them the concept. Ask: "Would you use this? What would make you stop using it? Would you pay ¥XX/month?"
- Interview 10 students. Not "do you like this idea?" but "show me how you study English right now" and "what makes you quit apps?"
App?"
- Find the paying customer. Is it the teacher? The school? The parent? This determines everything about your business model.
If the manual version works and teachers say "I need this as an app," you're validated. Build the MVP then — and only the MVP (teacher creates class → assigns word pack → students study → challenge → leaderboard → teacher sees data). Nothing else.
那时候再做 MVP——而且只做 MVP(老师建班 → 分配单词包 → 学生学习 → 挑战 → 排行榜 → 老师看数据)。
